VACATION CHECKLIST

Here are a few practical measures to help ensure your home is safe while you are away.

    1. Lock all doors and windows. Check alarm system to make sure it is working properly.

    2. Leave phone number where you can be reached with a trusted neighbor, and let them
    know the dates you will be away so they can keep and eye on your home.

    3. Cancel you mail and newspaper delivery or a have a neighbor pick them up for you.

    4. Give the appearance that your home is occupied by setting a timer turns on interior and
    exterior lights, the radio, and TV on and off.

    5. If you are leaving your car at home, park it in the driveway instead of the garage, or
    have a neighbor park their car in front of your house.

    6. Do not close all your blinds and shades – it is a tip off that no one is home.

    7. Do not leave exterior light on during the day – it is a tip off that no one is home.

    8. Never leave your house key hidden under a doormat, in a flower pot, or on the ledge of
    the door. Those are the places burglars will look first. Leave a key with a trusted neighbor.

    9. Do not change the outgoing message on you answering machine to say you will be out
    of town.

    10. Make sure you have an updated inventory of personal belongings for insurance
    purposes. Keep receipts and photo or video of belongings in a fire resistant container or in
    a location away from your home.
